Lost Coast Thresher
An unbelievable catch out of Shelter Cove.
Story/Photos/Videos by Jay

Jay, my Viking friend from the North and man who puts fear into Great White Sharks, solo landed this unbelievable fish.

I asked Jay how he caught the shark, whether it was coincidental or targeted. Here's his account:

My thresher shark was targeted. I rigged up heavy gear and used a big herring I cut into a cutplug. I ran like 8 ft of 80 lb mono topshot to a heavy duty swivel. On the swivel I tied a mooching type setup. 3 ft of 80 lb mono with 7/0 hooks. Ran it at a Slow troll looking for bait balls. I'd watch my gear on the fishfinder and troll thru the bait. I marked that thresher below a bait ball as my bait trolled thru the top of the ball. Within 5 seconds I was hooked up. Fought it for 1 hr r5 mins. I wanted to fight it and kill it solo so I told the other kayaks I was fine and to stay away. When it was tired and I had grabbed the tail, I sliced the artery and put a rope on it. When I had that done and had conquered it myself i called in some buddies. They came in and helped me drag it up onto my kayak.

Fish of the year! Jay and his 9-foot thresher shark.
