What better place to end a great season than in my home waters of Pigeon Point?

Posted on December 29, 2019

I met up with Ben, acupuncturist and man who is completely unafraid of needles, for the final trip of the year. We were also joined by Adam, practically a Pigeon Point local.

For a while it didn't look like we would get a chance for another fishing trip this December but the seas calmed down for just a bit on the last weekend of the month. The wind was coming from a southern direction and it made good strategic sense to head over to S1, a shallow reef located somewhere between Pigeon Point and Franklin Point.

Both Adam and Ben immediately landed a fish each but after that things went quiet. I persuaded the group to paddle further south to S2, a reef in deeper waters. By then the wind had already picked up and the paddle took a bit of an effort.

Luckily the work paid off and I landed a Brown, a Vermilion and a Lingcod in quick succession. The Lingcod was followed by a China, a Gopher, a Blue and another sizable Brown. Around that time whitecaps began to form. We took it as a sign to head in early.

A couple of browns, a couple of verms plus a lingcod.

Off-loading and...

...cleaning up.
The coffee hits the spot.
A storm is brewing.

The paddle back was a blast. Skeg down & full speed ahead! I was riding following seas all the way to the beach with speeds of 6-8 mph.

Two hours later the expected weather front had arrived with strong winds and heavy rains. And with that, rock fishing at Pigeon Point closed a couple of days early and until a new season starts in April 2020.
