Rockaway Salmon Limit
Fishing off the Pacifica shores.

The word was out that salmon were hanging around near Rockaway. I met up with James and headed over to the beach where we saw an entire fleet of kayaks and their captains, at least 30 kayaks were neatly lined up right at sunrise.

It was cold and foggy and we since this was new territory for us James and I took our sweet time and we were the last to launch.

Right off the beach we came across large schools of anchovies and I jigged up a few with my handline. Presence of anchovies always is a good sign and we were anxious to start looking for salmon. James and I trolled side-by-side through the thick fog over to Pedro Point. Right after I came around the point I hooked up and after a short fight the first salmon was in the boat. I rebaited my line and within minutes hooked another salmon of similar size. Since this filled out the daily bag limit I called James over my VHF and headed back to the launch point.

This was one of my luckiest days ever. I rarely catch fish when there's an entire fleet on the water and this time I was the last to launch and the first back to the beach with a salmon limit.

James returned after a while and reported that he also connected with a salmon, possibly quite a heavy fish, and lost it when the line broke.

We were hanging out for a while, ate breakfast and had a drink, and as the fleet slowly made its way back to the beach it became clear that very few people caught salmon and even fewer filled their limits. The lesson (or reminder to myself) is that you have to strike while it's there. I wasted no time after bagging the first fish and immediately got on the second one. This may have made the difference between an early return to the beach and a long day on the water looking for a second fish.

A double score netted salmon #7 and #8 for the season.

Rockaway Beach is exposed to the prevailing swells and it can be difficult to get out to open water. It's a surfer's beach.
My lucky day at Pacifica.
I couldn't have been happier!
Cooler filled, it's time to go home.
