Curious, confident, fearless — and always a wicked trick up her sleeve.

Of all the great adventures I had, spending a day on the beach with Mira is still at the top of my list. She's 8 now and knows her way around the kayak. She reminds me of Wickie the Viking boy.

It was a rough and windy day, too windy to go fishing on open ocean, and Mira had not paddled in these conditions before. She handled it like a pro and balanced her little boat beautifully. We focussed on bracing (what else would you do on a day like this) and she pushed hard to turn the nose of her Raven through the wind. After a few passes across the cove I used my towing line to give her some help.

Getting ready.
Sunny but cold.
Paddler.

Wind starting to build up.
Warming up.

That must be a really good towing line, I never felt her weight. Perhaps her 25 pound boat doesn't feel heavy anyways.

It's been a while. Good to be back & messing around at Encinal beach.

Later, while eating a scone in the van, Mira told me that she kept paddling for the entire time and never let the rope go taut despite the windy conditions we were in. Well, there you have it. It wasn't my super human strength and incredible will power after all. Note to self: I need to get some better on-the-water footage of this girl.
